Robert F. Smith, age 84 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, in the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Somerville, NJ, November 20, 1924, he was the son of the late Frank D. and Myra Snavely Smith. He had formerly resided in Far Hills, NJ, and Branchburg Township, NJ.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II serving with the 42nd Rainbow Division, and later served with the United States Air Force.
He worked as a Civil Engineer with H.W. Alward, Bernardsville, NJ, then worked for Marsellis-Warner, Princeton, NJ, then owned and operated Robert F. Smith, Inc. and Power Fence (now Somerset Valley Fence Works).
He was a member of the Readington Reformed Church, Readington, NJ, and was a former deacon and choir member there. He was a former 4-H Leader in Somerset County, NJ with the Sheep Club; former member of the Far Hills Board of Education, and the Branchburg Township Chamber of Commerce.
His wife, Hazell Holcombe Smith, died in 1997. He was also pre-deceased by two sons, Peter Smith in 1996 and Thomas Smith in 1953. Surviving are three daughters, Robbie-Jean Rice of Walton, NY, Laurie Ann Pryor of Henryville, PA, and J. Susan Gunther-McCauley of New Hope, PA; a brother, H. Richard Smith of Somerset, NJ; nine grandchildren: Brian, Cindy, Bryce, Sarah, Adam, Matt, Rebecca, Caitlin, and Fred; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 1 PM in the East Millstone United Methodist Church, Elm Street, East Millstone, NJ. Interment will be in Readington Cemetery, Readington, NJ. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 6-9 PM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
