Robert G. Sobeck

Robert G. Sobeck, age 95 years, of Clinton Township, New Jersey, died January 31, 2022 at his home.

He was born in New York City, October 5, 1926, son of the late Ernest A. and Anita M. Sobeck.

Mr. Sobeck, a Professional Engineer, was a consulting engineer for mechanical and environmental engineering projects in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, and other states. He specialized in wastewater treatment and served as the Executive Director for the Raritan Township Municipal Utilities Authority, as Superintendent of the Jersey City Sewerage Authority and as Consulting Engineer for the Rockaway Valley Regional Sewerage Authority and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy during World War II.

He was a Master Mason of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons and he served on the board of the Occupational Training Center of Burlington County, New Jersey. In Hunterdon County, he did pro bono engineering work for the Hunterdon County YMCA and for Anderson House (now a program of Turning Point) in Whitehouse Station.

He was an avid golfer and longtime member of Little Mill Golf Club in Taunton Lakes, New Jersey.

Surviving him are his partner of 38 years, JoAnne Byrnes; a sister, Bertha Krull, of Aurora, Colorado; a daughter, Pamela (John) Carroll of Somerset, New Jersey; a son, Robert G. (Barbara) Sobeck, Jr. of Charlottesville, Virginia; a step-son, Joachim Byrnes-Shay of Arlington, Virginia and a daughter-in-law, Karen Sobeck of Rancho Santa Margarita, California. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Betsy Carroll of Poughkeepsie, New York, Susan (Kevin) McCarthy of Somerset, New Jersey, Brian (Jill) Carroll of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Robert M. (Auna) Sobeck of Somerset, Virginia, Amy (Eric) Newsome of Charlottesville, Virginia, Jessica Sobeck of Charlottesville, Virginia, Kaitlin (Hana) Sobeck-Kim of Chicago, Illinois and Christopher (Liz) Sobeck of Lake Forest, California, Steven Sobeck of Connecticut and fourteen great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by JoAnne’s siblings: Judith Byrnes-Enoch, Mary Anne Byrnes, Jeanne Sadlik and John Byrnes and by five Byrnes nieces and nephews: Declan Byrnes-Enoch, Hannah Byrnes-Enoch, John Sadlik, Claire Byrnes and Julia Byrnes. He was predeceased by his wife Betty A. Sobeck, his son, Scott G. Sobeck, and his brother, Ernest A. Sobeck, Jr.

Due to the pandemic, there will be a private memorial service in the Spring at a place, date and time to be announced.
