Robert Hart Van Lieu, age 90 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Thursday, May 15, 2014 at his home.
Born in Ringoes, NJ, October 27, 1923, son of the late John Hart Van Lieu and Edith Danberry Van Lieu, he was a lifelong area resident. He had formerly lived for many years in Ringoes, NJ and spent many winters in Ft. Myers, FL.
Robert was a self-employed independent truck driver, operating R.H. Trucking, Ringoes, NJ servicing Lipton Company. He also had a retail egg route that serviced most of Hunterdon and Somerset counties. Prior to that, he worked for several years at Diamond Silver, Lambertville, NJ.
A longtime member of Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church, Ringoes, NJ, he was a man who believed in hard work and put his heart into all that he did. A talented tinkerer and woodworker, Robert was able to handle most things on his own and had several hobbies that he enjoyed, including making custom photo frames and fixing up old bicycles. He was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan as well as a fan of Nascar and all auto racing sports. He was a member of the North Shore Shuffleboard League in Ft. Myers, FL. Above all though, his family was his greatest pride.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four siblings, Charles Edgar Van Lieu, Doris Keimig, Carolyn Cooper and Jack Van Lieu.
On July 25, 2014, Robert would have celebrated seventy-two years of marriage to his wife, Freda Kaim Van Lieu, who survives him.
Additionally, he is survived by three children, Shirley and David Bond of Ringoes, NJ, Virginia Twardy of Lebanon, NJ and Robert W. and Mary Van Lieu of Rock Hill, SC; a sister, Mildred Valis of Albany, GA; five grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral Services will take place Monday at 2:00 p.m. in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, Reaville, NJ.
