Robert W. Reuter, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 14, 2024, in Saddle River, N.J. Bob was born in Bayonne, N.J. on October 20, 1931, the second youngest of six. He was proud of his Irish Catholic heritage and a man of great faith. Bob spent most of his life in Bergen County, N.J. where, alongside his loving wife of 69 years, they raised their five children. The last 19 years of his life were enjoyed in Hunterdon County where he often praised the open space and the sunrises and sunsets that afforded.
Robert received an opportunity to see his first Yankee game at the age of 13 with his brother, Gene. Eugene was serving in the Navy during World War II at the time when his ship was sunk. He was granted a furlough and two Yankee tickets before reporting back to service. Bob stepped into Yankee stadium with Gene, beginning his lifelong passion for baseball and a love for the Yankees.
Robert enlisted in the Navy in 1950 and assigned to the U.S.S. Columbus, CA-74. As one of the highlights during his service abroad, Bob was honored to have had a small private audience with Pope Pius XII while visiting Rome. He was honorably discharged in 1954 on a Tuesday and married his loving wife, Marion, the following Saturday. They were blessed with a long marriage of nearly 70 years.
Bob received his Bachelor of Business from Fairleigh Dickenson, Teaneck, NJ, attending on the G.I. Bill while maintaining a full-time job. He worked his entire career in Manhattan in the textile industry, rising to a position of senior credit manager. Bob enjoyed a strong work ethic and was always eager to make the early 6:00 am commuter bus.
Bob was a devout member of St. Mary’s Parish, Dumont, N.J. of which he was a member of the Catholic War Veterans, and St. Joseph’s Parish, Demarest, N.J. As their faith was paramount, Bob and Marion were very proud to provide each of their children with a Catholic education.
Bob’s pride and joy were his children. He and Marion also received great joy in celebrating their grandchildren’s accomplishments over the years. Alongside his family, Bob’s place of peace was found at the Jersey Shore where strong family memories were made and enjoyed over many years. The family tradition of vacationing on Long Beach Island continues to this day.
Bob is predeceased by his sister, Bernice, brothers, Edward, Eugene and William. He is survived by his wife, Marion, daughters Patricia Andrews (Arthur), Kathleen Lamb (Paul), Maureen Gallo (Richard) and sons Robert Reuter (Regina) and Brian Reuter (Stephanie) and sister, Rosemary Brunton. Bob is also survived by twelve grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at 10:30 AM in Our Lady of Victories Roman Catholic Church, Baptistown, NJ, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Cemetery, 10 Serpentine Road, Tenafly, NJ.
