Ronald Neil Campbell, of New York City and Flemington, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home in Flemington on Friday, May 29, 2015. Ron was born on March 7, 1926 in Morristown, NJ and grew up in Mountain Lakes, NJ.
Ron is survived by his devoted and loving wife Jule Campbell, his son Bruce Campbell , his grandchildren Hannah and Graham Campbell, and eight nieces and nephews. Ron was predeceased by his older brother, James Campbell, of Enola, PA, and his sister, Joan Gioni of Tenafly, NJ.
Ron joined the Navy in WWII at 17 years of age in 1944, and served as Pharmacist’s Mate aboard the carrier USS Bon Homme Richard (CV-31) in the Pacific during the Okinawa Campaign. Present in Tokyo Bay during the capitulation of the Japanese forces, he was one of the first Americans to step onto the Japanese mainland in his capacity as medic accompanying the US Marines.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Ron attended the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). He graduated in 1951 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Advertising Design. He was the Art Editor of the RISD class yearbook “Portfolio”.
Ron was hired in 1952 by Time Inc., where he rose to become Art Director of Fortune magazine. Ron was also a highly respected and sought after graphic designer, guest lecturer, author, painter, and contributor of articles to various publications including Graphis and Sports Illustrated.
In addition to his Philippine Liberation Medal and New Jersey State Distinguished Service Medal, Ron received awards from the Society of Illustrators (Gold and Silver), the Art Directors Club of N.Y., the American Newspapers Guild (Page One Award), the American Institute of Graphic Arts, Communication Arts Magazine, Art Direction Magazine, the Society of Publication Designers, the International Editorial Design Forum, Design and Production Magazine, the College & University Designers’ Association, and Design and Production Magazine.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.
