Samuel Komisar

February 20, 1919 — January 20, 2016

Samuel Komisar of Frenchtown, New Jersey passed away on January 20, 2016, exactly one month short of his 97th birthday. He was with Florence (Lesser) Komisar, his wife of 72 years, in Winter Garden Florida where they loved to escape NJ winters. They planned for this to be their last winter there after 29 years, then back to New Jersey for the future. Sadly, that was not to be. He was grateful for this one more time in the sun. Sam was born in Flemington, NJ where he lived until moving to Ringoes, NJ at age 6. He attended a one-room schoolhouse there and graduated from Flemington High School in 1936. His education prepared him to be awarded a scholarship to MIT, but his family’s needs kept him on the dairy farm. In 1943 he married his love, Florence. He remained on the Ringoes farm until 1965 when they moved to Frenchtown. He was devoted to family and community, serving as a member of the International Order of Odd Fellows, the Amwell Valley Volunteer Fire Company and the Amwell Valley Rescue Squad. He had a special ability to make those around him happy and enjoy a good laugh. His generosity was endless. He had a real love of life and living. No one was surprised when he bought himself a Honda motorcycle to ride to work at Johanna Farms or when he got inline skates for his 80th birthday. He survived all that! In addition to Florence, his survivors include his three daughters, of whom he was endlessly proud, and their families. Felice and Donald Firestone of Phillipsburg, Jeanne and Louis Lawrence Zuegner III of Ringoes, and Alice and Dave Phillips of Phillipsburg. Other family members include granddaughter Spring (Zuegner) LaFevre, her husband Dana, and their children Louis and Felice. And two grandsons, Louis Lawrence Zuegner IV, his wife Maggie and children Louis Lawrence Zuegner V (Quin), Isabelle and Zander of Yardley, PA and Sam and Ashley (Blakemore) Zuegner of Gold Beach. OR. Also surviving him are his sister, Naomi (Komisar) Yellin and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Hyman Komisar and sister, Ida (Komisar) Grossman. Plans for services are yet to be determined. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
