Samuel Stothoff II, age 76 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, formerly of Flemington and Franklin Township, Hunterdon County, NJ, died Monday, January 12, 2009 in the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township.
Born in Montclair, NJ son of the late George B. and Grace George Stothoff, Sam was co-owner of the Samuel Stothoff, Co., Inc., a well drilling business established in 1886.
He was a 1950 graduate of Flemington High School, Flemington, NJ and graduated from Ricker College, Houlton, ME with a degree in business administration.
Sam served in the United States Army as an A-Bomb mechanic and as a company clerk at Kileen Base, Texas from 1952-1954.
He was a sixty-two year member of the Flemington Baptist Church, Flemington, NJ; was a Boy Scout leader for many years as well as a Trustee of the South Branch Watershed Association.
He was a Past President of the Flemington Kiwanis Club and a former Board Director of the Hunterdon County SPCA. Additionally, Sam was a former member of the Board of Directors of the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce and was a Charter Director of Unity Bank.
Sam and his brother Dick shared the Distinguished Citizens Award given by the Boy Scouts of America in 1992. They also were the recipients of the Golden Award from the Hunterdon County Chamber of Commerce in 1998 for community service as well as the YMCA Men of the Year Award in 2000.
Surviving are his wife of forty-eight years, Verna Wolfinger Stothoff; two daughters, Sandra Koehler and her husband Edwin of Lansdale, Pa and Dawn Warner and her husband Ronald of Franklin Township, NJ; two grandsons, Robert and Brandon Koehler; a brother, Dick Stothoff and his wife Priscilla of Raritan Township, NJ; a step-sister, Jane Case Steeley and her husband Phillip of Quakertown, PA; one niece and three nephews.
