Sara Resnick

d. March 5, 2013

Sara Resnick, age 88 years old, of Raritan Township, NJ, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the Hunterdon Medical Center after a lengthy illness.

Born in Poland on May 25, 1924, she was a Holocaust Survivor. As a young girl, she spent two years in a labor camp. She was then transferred to a Displaced Person's Camp in Lampertheim, West Germany where she met her future husband, Jacob Resnick. They married in 1945 and welcomed their first son, Carl, in Germany in 1946. They arrived in the United States in January 1947, settling in Coney Island, NY where their second son, Ted, was born. In 1950, the family moved to a farm in Quakertown, NJ, where they raised chickens. Sara's husband, Jacob, was a true, hard-working visionary, who realized a need for work clothing for farmers. Thus, the Quakertown Dry Goods was established in 1956, as they welcomed their third son, Martin. The family moved to Raritan Township in 1963 where Jacob and Sara founded the Flemington Department Store. Though Jacob did not live to see the fruits of his labor, having died in 1967, Mrs. Resnick and her three sons worked side-by-side for 50 years to make the business what it is today. Sara continued to work seven days a week until her health started to deteriorate. She leaves behind a true legacy.

A lifetime member of the Flemington Jewish Community Center in Raritan Township, she served on the Board there and was a very generous philanthropic member of the community at large. Moreover, she was a huge supporter of Jewish causes.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-laws, Carl and Ruth, Theodore and Suzan, and Martin and Elizabeth; eight grandchildren, Jason, Stephanie, Joel, Suzie, Sara, Jennifer, Jacob and Victoria; and, six great-grandchildren, Emma, Sydney, Elizabeth, Lexy, Jackson and Oliver. Sara is also survived by her loving caretakers, Angela and Kim and her former daughter-in-law, Roberta Resnick.

Funeral Services will take place on Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at 11:00 AM at the Flemington Jewish Community Center , 5 Sergeantsville Road, Flemington, NJ 08822 under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in the Flemington Jewish Community Cemetery, Capner Street, Flemington, NJ. There are no calling hours and no flowers please.
