Dr. Sherwood George Walters, formerly of Sergeantsville, NJ and Topsail, NC died Thursday, January 2, 2014. He was born on May 9, 1926 in Detroit, Michigan. Son of George H. Walters and Helen Parker Walters, he was raised by his grandparents George A. Walters and Ethelwyn Taylor Walters.

He served in the Army during WW II (1944-1947) and rose to the rank of 1st lieutenant. He graduated: in 1949 from Western Maryland College with a B.A. cum laude, in 1950 from Columbia University with an M.S., in 1953 from Columbia Graduate School of Business with an MBA, with distinction, and in 1960 from New York University as an honors scholar with a Ph.D.

He began his teaching career at Lehigh University in 1950. During this time (1953-1957) Dr. Walters and his wife, Sandra co-hosted, Breakfast with the Walters, a daily radio program on WEST. He was hired as an executive vice president at Mobil Oil in 1960 and then went on to work at General Tire where he became an executive vice president and general manager of the overseas division. In 1970, he resumed his teaching career at the Rutgers University Graduate School of Business, where he was founding director of the Inter-functional Management Program. He retired from teaching as professor emeritus in 1993. While at Rutgers University he worked with the National Science Foundation in the states and abroad, helping to establish and sustain many Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers. He has co-authored seven books and 188 refereed journal articles. Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Walters made many significant contributions and innovations in business, government, and education. Dr. Walters was an active member of the Topsail Presbyterian Church including singing in the choir, serving as an elder, and heading the education committee. Dr. Walters touched many lives through his love of education and teaching. Throughout his life he was an avid reader. He will also be remembered for enjoying all types of music, driving the countryside and having a terrific sense of humor.

George was a treasured husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was predeceased by his wife of 51 years Sandra Walters and his sister Virginia Walters Rider. He is survived by his three daughters; Margie Taylor Clifford and her husband Ray of Mansfield Twp., NJ; Karen Capin Walters and Dr. Virginia Walters-McFee and husband Chris all of Milford, NJ; a son George A. Walters II; granddaughter Cassandra Jo Walters, grandson George A Walters III and his wife Sunny; all of Atlanta, Georgia; nieces Ann Rider and family of Altadena, California and Carrie Rider and husband of Norwalk CT. and a sister-in-law Dorothea Hyde of Honolulu, Hawaii.

A private memorial service will be held for the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Walters’ name to Rutgers University Foundation (@ Rutgers Business School, 1 Washington Park, Room 1125, Newark, NJ 07102) or themichellefund.org
