Sister Maria Michele Armato, O.P., age 96 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died Thursday, September 3, 2015, at her convent.
Born in Chicago, IL., May 1, 1919, daughter of the late Michele and Providenza Martello Armato, she was the foundress of the Dominican Sisters of Divine Providence. A religious sister and teacher, she had been a religious sister for seventy-three years. She received her BA in History from Rosary College, River Forest, IL. and received her Masters and Ph.D. from Fribourg University in Switzerland. Sister Maria Michele was formerly Dean of the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Villa Schifanoia, Italy, and she also taught Italian, French and Spanish at Rosary College. Fluent in several languages, she served as a translator for Mother Teresa in Italy and had met three popes.
A former resident of South Amboy,NJ, New Brunswick, NJ, and Piscataway, NJ, she had resided in Raritan Township for nine years.
She was pre-deceased by her siblings, Ann Marino, Domenica Armato, Grace Gebbard Anderson, Albert Armato and Phillip Armato.
Surviving are nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 10, 2015, at 10:00 AM in St. Magdalen de Pazzi Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ, followed by interment in St. Magdalen's Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be Wednesday 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 PM at Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
