Sophie Makarewicz, age 90 years, of Clinton Township, NJ, died on Sunday, November 4, 2012 at her home.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, December 21, 1921, daughter of the late John and Anna Waseliewski Honcharuk, she had resided in Clinton Township with her daughter for the past three years, having formerly lived for many years in Flushing, Queens, NY and Brooklyn, NY.
A zipper maker for over forty-five years with Waldes Kohinoor, Inc., Long Island City, NY, she helped make munitions during World War II when her factory was converted over to help the United States war effort.
A devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she greatly enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, both at Church and at the Hunterdon County Senior Center.
She was a longtime attendee of both the Russian Orthodox Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, Brooklyn, NY as well as The Orthodox Church of Saint Gregory Palamas, Glen Gardner, NJ.
Her husband, John Joseph Makarewicz, Sr., died in 1961.
Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Tony Durniak of Clinton Township, NJ; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Joyann Makarewicz of Manorville, NY; her sisters, Jean Dmitruk of Bayside, NY; four grandchildren, Melissa Makarewicz Morin, Lauren Makarewicz DeMarco, Kimberly Durniak Buchanan and Joseph Durniak; and three great grandchildren, Patrick, Sophia and Lilyana.
Calling hours will take place Tuesday from 3:00-7:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 2:00-4:00 and 7:00-9:00 p.m. at The Orthodox Church of St. Gregory Palamas, 5 Church Street, Glen Gardner, NJ, where a Parastas Service will be held Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
The Funeral Liturgy will be officiated by Fr. Killian (Sprecher), on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in The Orthodox Church of St. Gregory Palamas, 5 Church Street, Glen Gardner, NJ, under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Friends are asked to arrive at the Church no earlier than 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. Interment will follow in Long Island National Cemetery, 2040 Wellwood Avenue, Farmingdale, NY 11735.
