Sue Van Cleaf Posselt

March 12, 1939 — May 20, 2024

Sue (Van Cleaf) Posselt died on May 20th, 2024, at Laurel Circle Retirement Community in Bridgewater, NJ. She was the daughter of J. Willard and Frances (House) Van Cleaf. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Karl A. Posselt , who passed away in 2022; as well as her brother and sister-in-law, J.W. “Bill” and Charlotte Van Cleaf.

Surviving are her son, David K. Posselt, of Annandale, NJ; her daughter, Kirsten S. Posselt of Flemington, NJ; five grandchildren, Jenna, Jared, and Jessica Posselt and Gregory and Scott Veneziale; as well as her brother-in-law and his wife, Theodor and Catherine Posselt, of Parsippany, NJ. She is also survived by her beloved cat, Milo.

Sue was born in South Amboy, NJ on March 12, 1939, and grew up in Montclair, NJ, except during the WWII years while her father was serving overseas in the U.S. Army, when they lived with various relatives. She graduated from Montclair High School and Berkeley Secretarial School in East Orange, NJ (now Berkeley College). Prior to marriage, she worked for the RCA Record Division and the United Presbyterian Church, both in New York City, NY. She retired in 2006 from her position as Administrator of the East Amwell Zoning Board of Adjustment.

She fought with the BPU in the late 1990's trying to eliminate the long-distance toll calls within East Amwell. Neither she nor the BPU won because cell phones came into being and took care of the problem. She was the Editor of East Amwell's volunteer monthly newspaper, VIP (Voice of Interested People), retiring from that position in June 2016. Her first contribution to the VIP was a submission of the Ringoes Cub Scout Pack 65 News in 1975. From then on, all promotions were by default.

Sue was an avid seamstress, reader, genealogist and collector of U.S. stamps and postcards and dabbled with jewelry making, knitting, crocheting, and counted cross stitch. She was a member of the Princeton Chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). Early in her retirement Sue swam at the YMCA, which included talking and exchanging recipes while treading water. She also enjoyed the Needlework Group and the Healthy Bones Program at the County Senior Citizen Center in Flemington. Leaving Hunterdon County in 2021, after 52 years, was bittersweet for Sue, but she flourished and loved her time at Laurel Circle. She made many wonderful friends there and enjoyed a busy social schedule.

Sue had been a member of the Clover Hill Reformed Church since 1969, when she and Karl moved from Bernards to East Amwell. A Celebration of Life will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the Clover Hill Reformed Church, 890 Amwell Road, Hillsborough Township, NJ 08844.
