Ted V. Mills

Ted V. Mills, died Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township just prior to his 95th birthday.

Born July 27, 1919 in Grimes, Iowa, Ted was the son of the late William B. and Mona (Coburn) Mills. He lived most of his life in the Grimes and West Des Moines area, before moving to New Jersey in 1983.

Ted joined the United States Army in 1942 and served during World War II in Indonesia, India and Burma, helping to install pipelines there for the efforts of the US Air Force. After returning from the war, he worked for, and retired from, Standard Oil Company in Clive, Iowa, as a Terminal Operator. He was a member of the American Legion Post #577 in Grimes, Iowa. In New Jersey, he was a member of the Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church in Ringoes, and a member of the East Amwell Senior Citizens Club.

After retirement, Ted travelled extensively throughout the United States, making many trips to Canada’s Hudson Bay and the American Southwest. With a love of nature, Ted was an avid photographer, taking many photographs of the world that surrounded him. He submitted and had published some of his proudest pictures to various nature magazines; particularly, photographs of polar bears making their annual trek in Hudson Bay.

In addition to his parents, Ted was predeceased by his wife, Frances (Mayer) Mills in 1984, and five of his siblings, his three sisters, Ila Robinson, Mernita McDonald, and Janice Armstrong, and two brothers, Kenneth Mills and Billy Mills.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Roger DeLay, with whom he lived in East Amwell Township; his granddaughter, Michelle Hiscox of Oxford, MI; his granddaughter and husband, Melissa and Matthew Hays of Raeford, NC; his great-grandsons, Brandon and Trevor Hiscox; and his sister, Carolyn Roth of Grimes, IA.

Funeral services and burial will be in Grimes, Iowa. A memorial service at Kirkpatrick Memorial Presbyterian Church is being planned for a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.
