The Honorable Edmund R. Bernhard, age 74 years, of Raritan Township, NJ, died on Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at his residence.

Born in New York City, NY, March 25, 1934, he was the son of the late Julius and E. Helen Huffmeyer Bernhard. He lived in Flemington Borough and Raritan Township all of his life.

He was a lifelong attorney in Flemington, NJ for many years, first with Herr and Fisher, and then with Bernhard, Durst, and Dilts. He was appointed as a Superior Court Judge in 1989 in Hunterdon County, NJ, retiring in 2004. After retirement, he became a part-time judge in the Superior Courts of New Jersey.

He was a 1952 graduate of Flemington High School, and a 1956 graduate of Lafayette College, Easton, PA, and a graduate of the Cornell University Law School.

He was an Elder of the Flemington Presbyterian Church, member of Copper Hill Country Club, former President of the Hunterdon County Bar Association, former President of the Hunterdon County YMCA, and was a former member of the Flemington Rotary Club.

An avid Lafayette College alumnus and sports fan, he was a member of the college's Maroon Club and Marquis Society. He was also active in many other legal and civic organizations.

Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Menchek Bernhard; two daughters and sons-in-law; Barbara and Andrew Hanson of Greenwich, CT, and Elizabeth and Holden Hummel of Philadelphia, PA; and four grandchildren.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday at 1 PM in the Flemington Presbyterian Church under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Flemington, NJ. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4-8 PM in the church.
