The Honorable William Martin, Jr., Mayor of Flemington, NJ, age 75 years, died on Sunday, September 24, 2006 at the Hunterdon Medical Center, Raritan Township, NJ.
Born in Atlantic City, NJ, June 28, 1931, he was the son of the late William and Caroline M. Price Martin, Sr. He had formerly resided in West Amwell Township, NJ, moving to Flemington in 1976. He was Mayor since January of this year.
An optician with offices in Flemington, he retired in 1982, and then became a real estate appraiser with Michael Morris Associates, Flemington, NJ, until five years ago.
He was a United States Army veteran of the Korean War, during which he was awarded the Purple Heart and the Silver Star for bravery.
He was a graduate of Pleasantville High School, Pleasantville, NJ, where he was captain of the football team, and later played semi-pro football. He formerly owned harness horses.
He was a member of the Lambertville Kiwanis Club, and was twice Chairman of the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission. Mr. Martin served as Chairman of the Hunterdon County Democratic party from 1990-1994.
Surviving are his wife of fifty-five years, Joan Cannon Martin; two daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Stephen Merrill, of Dartmouth, MA, and Kathleen Martin and Stephen Ross, of Tiverton, RI; and two grandchildren, Sarah M. Merrill and David M. Merrill, both of Dartmouth, MA.
Funeral Services will be held Friday at 8:30 p.m. in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA. Calling hours will be Friday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. at the Funeral Home.
