Thomas J. Shannon, age 90, died on Friday, April 13, 2018, at the Hunterdon Care Center in Flemington, New Jersey. He was a resident at HCC for the past year, where he enjoyed warm and loving care, and enthusiastically participated in the frequent sing-alongs. His wife, Trudy, continues to reside at HCC.
Tom was born in Brooklyn, New York, on February 16, 1928 to James and Marguerite Shannon. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, and was delighted when his nephew, Thomas Hartmann, followed in this tradition.
Tom married Gertrude Wells Shannon on November 11, 1950, in Brooklyn New York. They were blessed (and burdened) by five daughters, Phyllis Shannon, Laura Shannon Sgroi, Winnie Shannon, Mariane Shannon Sabo, and Celine Shannon Sullivan. Tom, along with his surviving spouse Trudy, cherished their 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas W. Shannon, by an infant son, Edward W. Shannon, and by his siblings, James Shannon and Mary Shannon Hartmann. His brother, William Shannon, continues to live in Brooklyn.
After lifelong career working for AT&T, Tom and his wife spent decades traveling the globe. They were adventurous and indefatigable, thinking nothing of flying to Moscow or Buenos Aires for a long weekend. Tom's membership in the Flemington chapter of BPOE was important to him. Belonging to the Elks brought Tom strong friendships and good memories.
At his request, his body will be cremated under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. A private mass will be held in the near future.
In lieu of flowers, mourners are requested to donate to the Flemington-Raritan Rescue Squad at 26 NJ-12, Flemington, NJ 08822.
