Walter Bernard Ross

August 10, 1927 — May 23, 2020

America lost another member of our “Greatest Generation”.

Walter Bernard Ross of Macungie, PA passed away on May 23, 2020 at age 92. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Ross. Surviving are his children, Linda O’Reilly, Walter Ross, Dennis Ross, and Michael Ross, all from NJ, 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, as well as his sister, Joan Zipf, and brother, Keith Roberts.

Walter served in the US Navy in World War II as a member of Air Group 20 on the USS Philippine Sea. When the war ended, he went home to start his family but was called up once again during the Korean conflict. He then served his country for four more years as a member of the ship’s company on the USS Randolph.

In his early years, Walter grew up in Hillside, NJ and spent many summers at his grandmother’s farm in Hopewell, NJ. He was a graduate of Seton Hall University. His numerous careers included US Postal Service, insurance sales, real estate sales, and the career he discovered later in life, which he loved the most, real estate appraising. He owned and operated Ross and Ross Associates in Chester, NJ throughout much of the 1980’s.

Walter and Dorothy lived and raised their family in Clark, NJ for most of their working days before retiring and moving to Macungie, PA for the life of leisure in the mid 1990’s.

Walter was fond of Manhattans and milkshakes. It is said by his children and grandchildren that he made the best milkshakes on the East Coast of America! He loved baseball and football and served for many years as the secretary of the Pop Warner football team in Clark.

But most of all, it was his love of family and friends that he enjoyed the most. He loved parties, dancing and dressing up in big hats. At Christmastime he was known as “Ole Saint Nick” in reference to his tradition of joke gift giving on Christmas Eve.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held privately under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. For further information or to send online condolences we invite you to visit www.holcombefisher.com.
