Walter R. Becker

November 1943 – February 2024

A modern-day Renaissance man, with an infectious laugh and a huge heart!

Walter “Bud” Becker of Flemington, N.J. died peacefully on February 1, 2024, at Morristown Hospital after a brief, but courageous battle with metastatic melanoma cancer.

Bud grew up in East Northport, N.Y. and was a star 3 sport athlete at Northport High School. He was also part of the inaugural group of athletes inducted into the NHS Athletic Hall of Fame. After graduating from NHS, he attended Brown University where he also played baseball and basketball. Upon graduating from Brown University, he joined the Marine Reserves and became a morse code instructor, then entered a selective executive training program at IBM.

He joined Informatics General Corporation, a software services firm where he had a successful career for many years. He subsequently started his own software consulting firm, Global Computer Associates, where he remained until he retired at age 66.

His personal life was filled with numerous interests, including time with family and friends, years of sailing and boating on Long Island Sound, Chesapeake Bay and Narragansett Bay, attending sporting events, theater and concerts, participating in fantasy baseball leagues, raising cows, and worldwide travel with his wife and loving partner, Lynn Snow Becker. His years at Brown and intellectual curiosity also inspired him to become a lifelong learner and avid reader, which formally continued after retirement, taking an eclectic array of courses at Princeton.

These are the biographical highlights of his life but don’t fully capture the extraordinary nature of who he was. He was an individual who had a profound impact on the lives of all who knew him. His incredible zest for life, enduring commitment to family and friends, humor, intelligence, great enthusiasm for everything he did, love of learning - all of this was truly inspiring to those who had the good fortune of knowing him. He truly lived life to the fullest. While he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him, each of our lives has been made so much better by his presence. The flame may have gone out, but his light remains.

The son of the late Walter J. Becker and Adeline Becker, Bud is survived by Lynn, his wife of 33 years; his sisters Pam Olearczyk and husband Andy, and Diana Rubino; niece Sarah Olearczyk Yeagle and family; nephews Christopher Olearczyk, Andy Olearczyk, Robert Rubino; his Aunts Alice Powers, June Simpson, and Teena Geyer; and many cousins who looked up to him.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Brown University Sports Foundation, P.O. Box 1877, Providence, RI 02912.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a future date and will be posted on the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home website when known.
