Walter W. Sorg, age 92 formerly of Whitehouse, NJ died peacefully on July 17, 2020 at Heath Village in Hackettstown, NJ.
Born in Cedar Grove, New Jersey, Walt was the son of late William and Pauline Thumm Sorg. He joined the US Marine Corps shortly after World War II, and, after an honorable discharge in 1948, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Springfield College in Massachusetts.
After graduation in 1952, Walt went to work with the YMCA in Cedar Grove NJ, which started his long tenure working for the YMCA organization; first as Youth Director of the Westerly, RI YMCA to being the Executive Director for the Princeton (NJ) YMCA.
After moving to Clinton NJ in 1977, he restored a pre-Revolutionary War home there and started a new job at the Hunterdon County YMCA, raising money for the new Deer Path YMCA in Readington Township NJ.
Walt was predeceased by his son, Peter Sorg in 1984 and his wife, Vivian Reed Sorg in 2015.
Walt enjoyed carpentry, gardening, antiquing and spending time with his wife, Vivian, as well as his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Sorg & her husband, Mark Mandelberg of Flemington NJ, his three grandchildren and their spouses, Jessica and Jeff DeRose of High Bridge NJ, Kyle and Dominique Mandelberg of Bernardsville NJ, and Corey and Stephanie Mandelberg of Annandale NJ, as well as his four great-grandchildren, Jayse, Lila, Graysen DeRose and Owen Mandelberg.
Memorial services with Military Honors and inurnment in Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge NJ are being planned for a later date. Please continue to check this webpage for further information or to leave an online condolence at www.holcombefisher.com.
Cremation services are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ.
