William E. Hughes, Jr., age 78, of Clinton NJ, died Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at the Hunterdon Care Center in Raritan Township NJ.
Born June 14, 1945 in Coatesville PA, Bill was the son of the late William and Marian (Gill) Hughes, Sr. He grew up in Pennsylvania before moving to New York State, Flemington NJ, and then eventually to Clinton NJ in 1998.
Bill served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972 during the Vietnam War. He received his undergraduate degree from Elizabethtown College (PA) and his Master’s Degree from Southern Illinois University.
Bill retired from Burnham Corporation where he worked in Sales for many years.
While living in Flemington, he enjoyed going to the races at the former Flemington Speedway, listening to a favorite cassette tape of Rod Stewart or watching the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles or the Philadelphia Phillies when he could. He was an avid coin collector and enjoyed going to the movies.
Bill enjoyed travelling with his wife of 26 years, Betty. Favorite destinations included trips to Maui in the Hawaiian Islands, Italy, Montana (where they visited many of the National Parks), and many vacations to the Outer Banks in North Carolina with his sister and her family to relax on the beach.
Bill is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Hughes, his sister, Jean Warfel of Sadsburyville PA, his niece, Elizabeth Smith of Sadsburyville PA, his nephew, Wyatt Warfel of Bowling Green KY, his nephew, Charles Warfel of Pennsylvania, and his step-daughter Michelle Horner and step-grandkids, Kylee and Kelsey, from Basking Ridge, NJ.
Cremation services and funeral arrangements are under the direction of Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822. Interment with Military Honors will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, June 1, 2024 in Three Bridges Cemetery, 470 Main Street, Three Bridges NJ 08887.
