William E. Toolan

William E. Toolan passed away peacefully at Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH on July 28, 2018. He was 94 years of age.

Bill was a member of the St. Magdalen Church Parish in Flemington and an usher at 7:30 Sunday Mass for many years. He was also a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council No 3294.

Bill was born in Plainfield, NJ to James and Delia McNulty Toolan. He attended Plainfield schools and in 1943, volunteered for service in the United States Navy. He was assigned to VPB #102 as a tail gunner on a Navy B-24 patrol plane in the Pacific during World War II. Upon completion of service to his country, Bill worked for New Jersey Bell Telephone (Verizon) for 42 years, retiring in 1988.

In 1968, the family moved to Hunterdon County and he joined the Raritan Township Fire Company. In 50 years, he held many positions including Chief of the department.

Bill was predeceased by his daughter, Suzanne, RN, SA in 2009.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, MaryJane Vervoort Toolan; his daughters, LeeAnn, DVM, CVA of New Boston, NH, and Nancy Lynn, BA, MFA of Princeton, NJ; three granddaughters, three great granddaughters, and two great grandsons.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 3, 2018 at 11 a.m. in St. Magdalen Church, 105 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will follow in St. Magdalen Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, August 2, 2018 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Raritan Township Fire Company, 303 South Main Street, Flemington, NJ 08822.
