William J. Mason, Sr., age 87 years, of Readington Township, NJ, died on Friday, October 17, 2008, in St. Clare's Hospice, Dover, NJ.
Born in Mt. Horeb, NJ, August 3, 1921, he was the son of the late William and Mabel Nelson Mason. He had resided in Three Bridges, NJ for most of his life.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in Europe and the Pacific as a combat engineer.
He was a farmer and worked for Loft's Seed Company, formerly of Martinsville, NJ, for fifty-seven years.
He was an active member of the Mt. Horeb United Methodist Church and the Cemetery Association there. He was also a member of the Three Bridges Fire Department Fire Brigade.
Bill, along with his son, enjoyed stock car racing every Saturday night at the former Flemington Speedway. He was always there to help in the pits.
He was pre-deceased by his first wife, Shirley Adriene Dilts Mason in 1979; a son, John Carmen Mason in 1976; a granddaughter, Samantha Heater in 1992; five sisters, Florence Rustic Derwitz, Esther "Et" Kingman, Helen Closter Parr, Alice Cramer, Doris "Dotty" Dilts; and two brothers, Albert and Robert Mason. He is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Cathy Mason; a son and daughter-in-law, William Joseph, Jr. and Pat Mason of Allentown, NJ; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Wayne Heater of Flemington, NJ, and Terry and Charlie Amerman of Englewood, TN; a sister, Elsa Engelhardt Calaway of Bonnell, FL; a sister-in-law, Doris Mason of Columbia Cross Roads, PA; a daughter-in-law, Kathy Mason of Milford, NJ; a step-son, Stanley Jankowski and his wife Tracey of Phillipsburg, NJ; a step-daughter, Carol Snook of Three Bridges, NJ; nine grandsons: Danny, Eddie, Justun, Kyle, Charlie, Robert, Michael, Joseph, and Andrew; five granddaughters: Michelle, Jody, Amber, Kimberly, and Marybeth; a step granddaughter, Breanna; three step grandsons, Douglas, Casey, and Bryan; six great grandsons; seven great granddaughters; many nieces, nephews, and good friends; and his loyal dog, Blackie.
Bill mostly enjoyed his time with his family and friends, but also enjoyed working on his farm, gardening, enjoying Nascar, restoring benches, and helping his fellow neighbors and friends.
Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 AM in the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, 147 Main Street, Flemington, NJ. Interment will be in Mt. Horeb Cemetery, Warren, NJ. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 6-9 PM in the funeral home.
