William W. Carhart, age 82 years, of Ringoes, NJ, died Monday, May 1, 2023, at Hunterdon Care Center, Raritan Township. NJ.
Born in Elizabeth, NJ, on December 25, 1940, Bill was the son of the late Vincent and Ethel Herman Carhart, he was a 1965 graduate of the University of Iowa.
A former newspaperman, he was originally a copy boy and then a reporter for the New York Post and later was an editor for the NY Daily Bond Buyer. After that career, he taught English and Expository Writing at Trenton State Prison and retired after twenty-five years there.
Bill was a lover of nature and he enjoyed painting, reading anything he could get his hands on, writing short stories and spending time with the many four legged friends (many of which were adopted) that crossed his path and captured his heart. True to his favorite poem, "When I Heard the Learn'd Astronomer", he enjoyed learning through nature and observing its beauty as often as possible. He was a gentle man with a giving heart and an amazing capacity to love.
In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by his brother, John in 2020. Among his survivors are a sister and brother-in-law, Margaret and Richard Smith of Florida, his three nieces, Laura Curley, Sara Carpini, and Rebecca Thompson, his two nephews, Peter Curley, and Andrew Smith, as well as many grand nieces and nephews, and his sister-in-law, Betty Carhart.
Bill enjoyed his time spent with his friends in and around Ringoes, especially Phil Lambert and “Charlie Tuna." Due to a health issue, he would not have been able to live independently as long as he did, without the help of these friends.
